Geography and Climate

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily and Sardinia with a total area of 9.251 sq. km (3.572 sq. miles). The island is situated in the northeastern area of the Mediterranean ideally located at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and Asia and in close proximity to the three continents and their trade routes (the island is about 60km south of Turkey and 100 km west of Syria).

The capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, the island’s administrative and main business center, is situated in the central plain near the middle of the island.

Due to mild winters and long, dry summers (with an average of 300 sunny days per year) Cyprus enjoys one of the most pleasant and healthy climates in the Mediterranean.

The standard time of Cyprus is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

Topography

The island has two mountain ranges, the Troodos Range and the Keryneia Range and beaches famed worldwide which are visited by more than two million tourists every year.

Demography

Cyprus’ population is about 802.500 (end of 2002) consisting of Christian Greek Cypriots who make up 80.1% of the population and Moslem Turkish Cypriots who make up approximately 10.9%. The remaining 9% are foreign workers.

While the majority of the Greek Cypriot Community are members of the Autocephalous Greek Cypriot Orthodox Church of Cyprus, 1% are actually members of the Armenian, Maronite and Latin churches.

Air Services

Regular scheduled air services link Cyprus with the major cities of Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Gulf. The island’s two International airports are situated near Larnaca and Paphos not far from and with easy access to the capital Nicosia. These Cypriot airports are served by 35 international airlines as well as 55 chartered airlines.

Sea Services


The major ports of Cyprus, situated in Limassol and Larnaca on the south coast, offer modern facilities for all types of shipping including both containerized and break bulk cargo and are included in the regular shipping lines to and from all continents.

The number of vessels calling at Cyprus’s ports each year is around 5200 ships which total 20 million registered tons.

Telecommunications

Cyprus’ telecommunications infrastructure is one of the most developed in the region. Apart from conventional telecommunications services such as telephony, telex and telegraphy, The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority offers a wide range of value-added services such as videoconferencing audiotex and access to Internet.

In order to continue its advancement it has introduced the multimedia messaging service (mms) and the teleconferencing service in mobile telephony, the CYTANET MPLS IP-VPN service, which provides the ability to create Virtual Private Networks via MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) technology, as well as the miVision service, which uses the latest ADSL technology to offer simultaneous use of digital and interactive TV, video on demand, telephony and fast internet access via a single telephone line.
